Not what I meant
Wasn't saying there was a formal agreement.
But Jones is going to be getting HC offers in the next couple of years. Knowing there is stability and Young will be the coach for at least the next 4 years or so allows him to be comfortable with being a Hokie an extra year or two if he wants to. And since Young is 58 right now, knowing four years from now he'll be 62 and probably be considering retirement, it allows him to think more about staying with the Hokies instead of pondering any offers that will certainly come him way. He doesn't have to go anywhere and still can achieve his goal of being a head coach.
Smart executives do that in companies where they have younger talent. They don't promise them anything down the road. But they provide an environment where that young talent sees they could be comfortable yet achieve their longer term goals without leaving. That's what I'm suggesting the athletic department may be doing with this announcement. Shows a long term vision and strategic plan.
Which would be surprisingly nice.
